But then he was asked to come to the palace, not to be the king or an advisor, but to play his harp whenever King Saul suffered from depression . He could have thought, “Why am I being treated as a part-time musician? I am anointed.” But see how strategic God is. All David had known was the shepherds’ fields. Now he’s in the palace in the presence of King Saul. God is showing him what it means to be a king. He’s getting him familiar with how a king operates, protocols , the staff that serves him. David didn’t realize his task was divinely orchestrated. God put him there to get him prepared for where he was going.   Skate Toward the Puck Scripture: 2 Corinthians 5:10 “ For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each of us may receive what is due us for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad. ” (2 Corinthians 5:10) Wayne Gretzky, the famous hockey player, reportedly advised, “Skate to where the puck will be.” For the successful athlete, it is important to anticipate your opponent’s next move. Timing is critical; a split second can give a major advantage for scoring a goal. Failure to anticipate can mean the difference between victory and defeat. We can apply Gretzky’s advice to our spiritual life. Sooner or later, our “time bubble” will pop and we will face eternity. He warns us about having rocky or thorny soil. He’s saying, “What’s around you? What’s influencing you? Who’s speaking into your life? Who are you giving your time and attention to?” The thorns could be friends who keep causing you to compromise. The weeds are coworkers who gossip and talk about how bad life is. The rocks are relatives who tell you that you’ll never be successful . They are choking out the seed of God’s Word in your life. They’re choking out your dreams, your vision, your character. Each of us has been specifically designed by God for his purpose and use.
