  Develop a Consuming Desire for God’s Word Scripture: 1 Peter 2:2–3 “ Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good. ” (1 Peter 2:2-3) Once a baby has tasted its mother’s milk, the focus of that baby’s life is to cry, “More! More!” The cry for more milk becomes the overriding desire of the baby’s life. The milk tastes good! The baby needs the milk if it is to survive and grow into a child and then an adult. Peter uses this metaphor to illustrate our consuming desire for the Word of God. The only way we will be able to grow up into mature believers is if we consume God’s Word. The Word of God must saturate our inner person if we are to be effective witnesses for him. By ingesting our “spiritual M&M’s”— m emorizing and  m editating on the Word of God—we can grow in him. (Psalm 118:24) Today’s Blessings In every season of our life, we’re tempted to focus on our present burdens and miss the blessings. We love it when we receive the blessing—the promotion, the new house, the baby—but with the blessing comes new burdens—responsibilities, payments, cares. Rather than enjoy where we are on the way to where we’re going, we get so caught up in the challenges that we miss the beauty of this moment. You could be in one of the best seasons of your life, but you don’t realize it because you’re focused on the struggles, on what you don’t like, on what’s taking so long. At some point you have to put your foot down and say, “This is the day the Lord has made, and I will not allow my burdens to steal my enjoyment of my blessings.” Change your perspective. Shift your focus from the burden to the blessing, from what’s wrong to what’s right, from what you don’t have to what you have. Make the mo...

  Sharing in God’s Secrets Scripture: Psalm 25:14 “ The Lord confides in those who fear him; he makes his covenant known to them. ” (Psalm 25:14, NIV) Imagine it! The Lord actually confides in those who fear him. Not only that, but he also shows them his covenant. This means he shows them his favor. What are we willing to do to experience the favor of God? When we become acquainted with God through his Son, Jesus Christ, all kinds of wonderful things happen. We become friends with God, and friends share secrets along life’s way. The same is true in our relationship with God. He reveals many of the mysteries of the kingdom as our relationship develops with him. “ But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory ” (1 Corinthians 2:7).   In everything you do, stay away from complaining and arguing… (Philippians 2:14) Your Rough Edges Some of the things that God has in your future you wouldn’t be able to handle if He gave them to you right now. He loves you too much to let that happen. He’s developing your character, growing you up. That boss who gets on your nerves, who doesn’t treat you right—you keep trying to pray him away. The reason he’s not going away is that God is using him like sandpaper to rub the rough edges off you. As you keep doing the right thing, keeping your mouth closed, being respectful, being faithful to your responsibilities, that’s doing a work in you. You couldn’t develop your character without him. You may not like it, but God won’t allow a difficulty unless He is going to somehow use it for your good. This includes the closed doors you face, the delays, and the loan that didn’t go through.   Be a Winning Team Player Scripture: 1 Corinthians 2:6 “ We do, however, speak a message of wisdom among the mature, but not the wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are coming to nothing. ” (1 Corinthians 2:6) Fans of the winning team become really pumped up, yelling and waving their arms. Those of us who practice  Kingdom  of God are not only fans of the winning team, but we are also players on the team—and it is always exciting to be on the winning team! The Bible explains to us God’s plan for the ages and generally how it is going to end. He also reveals how we can be significant players on his winning team. Not only that, he gives us the opportunity to invest our time, talent, and treasure in this huge salvaging operation to save humankind.   Sovereign Lord, receive my prayers as incense, as I lift them up to you. Guard my words and my actions this day so that all I do is in accord with your will and gives glory and honor to you. Amen.

  Countering a Culture of Instant Gratification Scripture: Genesis 25:29–34 “Once when Jacob was cooking some stew, Esau came in from the open country, famished. He said to Jacob, ‘Quick, let me have some of that red stew! I’m famished!’ (That is why he was also called Edom.) Jacob replied, ‘First sell me your birthright.’ ‘Look, I am about to die, Esau said. ‘What good is the birthright to me?’ But Jacob said, ‘Swear to me first.’ So he swore an oath to him, selling his birthright to Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau some bread and some lentil stew. He ate and drank, and then got up and left. So Esau despised his birthright.” (Genesis 25:29-34) In this passage of Scripture, we see a man foolishly give up his birthright; he exchanges all the benefits and the favor of his father for a pot of stew just because he is hungry.
