Numbers 14:1-10!

Introduction

Numbers 14:1–10: The book of Numbers tells the story of the Israelites during the nearly forty years from the time they left Mount Sinai (Exodus 33:1) until they reached the eastern border of Canaan—the land God had promised them. In today’s reading, the Israelites fear God will betray them, leading them into a land of destruction rather than flourishing. Joshua and Caleb, two of the leaders who had been chosen to explore the Promised Land, caution the people not to rebel against the Lord.

Today’s Key Verse: Numbers 14:9 GNT

[Joshua and Caleb said:] “Do not rebel against the LORD … The LORD is with us … so don’t be afraid.”

Read

14 All night long the people cried out in distress. They complained against Moses and Aaron, and said, “It would have been better to die in Egypt or even here in the wilderness! Why is the Lord taking us into that land? We will be killed in battle, and our wives and children will be captured. Wouldn't it be better to go back to Egypt?” So they said to one another, “Let's choose a leader and go back to Egypt!”

Then Moses and Aaron bowed to the ground in front of all the people. And Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, two of the spies, tore their clothes in sorrow and said to the people, “The land we explored is an excellent land. If the Lord is pleased with us, he will take us there and give us that rich and fertile land. Do not rebel against the Lord and don't be afraid of the people who live there. We will conquer them easily. The Lord is with us and has defeated the gods who protected them; so don't be afraid.” 10 The whole community was threatening to stone them to death, but suddenly the people saw the dazzling light of the Lord's presence appear over the Tent.

Reflect

What do the Israelites say to Moses and Aaron (verses 1–4)? Why do they doubt God’s faithfulness? What do Joshua and Caleb say to the people (verses 6–9)? What do the people threaten to do to them (verse 10)? What happens next? How would you describe Joshua and Caleb? What do their words indicate about their trust in God?

Pray

Faithful God, remind me each day of your steadfast love and care. I place my trust in you. May my words and actions this day be pleasing in your sight. In your holy name, I pray.
