True Rishes!
True Riches
“Make sure that your character is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you.””
—Hebrews 13:5
Today’s verse presents a godly perspective of what being rich really means. It’s telling us that a rich person is not someone who has everything he wants but rather someone who has learned how to be content with what he has. The apostle Paul learned a secret about life— be at peace in every situation. He said, “I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need” (Phil. 4:12).
One thing I’ve discovered is that the only people who think money is the answer are those who don’t have money. It’s the same with fame. The people who think fame would make them happy are those who have never had fame, because people who have been famous, including myself, know that fame doesn’t satisfy. Likewise, those who have money know money isn’t the answer. Now, I know that if we don’t have enough money to put a roof over our heads and food in our stomachs and take care of real needs, we have some extremely significant challenges. But the point I am making is that the things we often think are the answer for our happiness are not. Paul was not chasing after things that could not satisfy him. He learned how to be content with simply being at peace within himself through the Lord.
Let’s not waste our energy searching after vain things that can never fully satisfy. The Lord is our fullness. The apostle Paul said that “the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit” (Rom. 14:17). Let’s search for the One who will spring up from within us to become a well of living water so that we will thirst no more (John 4:14). In Messiah Jesus are all the treasures of life. In Him “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Col. 2:3). He has more for us than we imagine. All we need to do is give our whole heart to Him.
Father God, only You can truly satisfy. Fill me afresh with Your Holy Spirit. Let me drink from the rivers of Your living water so that I can truly find satisfaction. To God be the glory.
Amen
