 Two Reasons to Give

“Do not accumulate for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and devouring insect destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But accumulate for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and devouring insect do not destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. For where yourtreasureis, there your heart will be also.”(Matthew 6:19–21)

We have two reasons to give our time, talent, and treasure to God.

First of all, giving in our investment in eternity. Only two things will last for all of eternity: God’s Word will endure forever, and the souls of people will live forever in one of two places. Everything else perishes. Everything you and I can see and touch is going to perish. Our relationship with Jesus Christ will determine where we will live in eternity, and how we spend our time, talent, and treasure will determine how we live in eternity. We want our investment to be in heaven. 

The second reason we want to be about the business of giving, is because it is the way through which God works in and through us. Second Corinthians 9:8 tells us, “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work.” 

We are not talking about the so-called prosperity gospel here. The example of the New Testament does not promote the idea of serving God in order to be rich in this world. John died in exile on the Isle of Patmos. He certainly wasn’t rich materially. Paul experienced beatings, jail time, hardships, and shipwrecks. Throughout history, many Christians have faced horrible persecutions and deaths, and in many parts the world today, the same persecutions are taking place.

What we are talking about is investing our time, talent, and treasure in the kingdom of God and pursuing what we know from God’s Word are his desires. When we do this, we place ourselves in a position where the Holy Spirit will bless all that we do. 

Today, ask yourself:

How am I allowing Son Power to work in me so that my time, talent, and treasure is an investment in God’s kingdom?

Give Cheerfully!

        Give Cheerfully “Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.”  (2 Corinthians 9:7) When giving is done with the right attitude, it can be a gateway for God to move in significant ways in our lives. It is important to remember that it is not the amount we give that matters so much as it is the attitude that characterizes our giving. God loves it when we give out of a cheerful and grateful heart. God’s loving of a cheerful giver results in God taking action in our lives. Scripture states unequivocally that God will make all spiritual and earthly blessing abound to us so we can multiply our efforts for the kingdom. This is why I believe giving provides a major gateway for God to work in our lives, we can expect God to visit us.
