Avoiding Mission Drift!

Avoiding Mission Drift

Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day or the hour.” (Matthew 25:13)

We are counseled in Scripture to watch for many things. We are particularly told to be on the lookout for the return of the Lord, which can happen at any time.

In the world of nonprofit organizations, the term mission drift is used when an organization either finds that it has moved away from the organization’s main mission, or the organization consciously moves in a direction away from its mission statement. As Christians, we also need to guard against mission drift. Converterlators are on mission directed by God. I developed the following WATCH acrostic to help me to stay focused on God’s mission:

W—WORD—Pay attention to God’s Word for direction.

“Moreover, we possess the prophetic word as an altogether reliable thing. You do well if you pay attentionto thisas you wouldto a light shining in a murky place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.” (2 Peter 1:19)

A—ACTION—Be ready for action at all times.

“Get your minds ready for actionby being fully sober, and set your hopecompletely on the grace that will be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed.” (1 Peter 1:13)

T—TEMPTATION—Be on the lookout for temptation.

“Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak.” (Mark 14:38, NLT)

C—COMMIT—Commit every moment into God’s hands.

“Commit your future to the Lord. Trust in him, and he will act on your behalf.” (Psalm 37:5)

H—HELP—Trust that God will help you.

“The Lord strengthens and protects me; I trust in him with all my heart. I am rescuedand my heart is full of joy; I will sing to him in gratitude.” (Psalm 28:7)

Following these steps will help protect us from mission drift and from the evil one.

Today, ask yourself:

In what ways am I staying focused on God’s mission for my life?
